Gareth Gates and Faye Brookes look divided in last pictures before split

Gareth Gates and Faye Brookes looked a little divided the last time they were pictured together - more than one month before their split.

The former couple were last seen together on July 3 as they headed out on a date night in Manchester.

Coronation Street star Faye, 31, looked bright and smiley as she stepped out wearing a pretty black mini dress and boots.

Singer Gareth, 35, appeared a lot more downcast and didn't raise a smile as he was snapped by photographers.

The Pop Idol star hid his eyes beneath a pair of sunglasses and dressed for his date night in a white polo shirt, light skinny jeans and Chelsea boots.

The straight-faced star showed no emotion as he walked hand-in-hand with his then wife-to-be.

The couple, who got engaged in January after getting back together, are said to have split again after struggling to make their relationship work.

But insiders say they hope to remain friends.

They originally split last year after six years together, but got back together in September, with Gareth popping the question a few months later.

A source close to the couple told Manchester Evening News : "Faye and Gareth are both extremely sad about their relationship ending.

"They still care very much about each other and want to remain friends, but the wedding has been called off.

"Her family and close friends have been supporting her through the split.

"Although it's a painful time she's trying to keep busy with various projects and auditions.

"They tried to make it work but sadly it's not meant to be."

Faye opened up about their time apart in March, telling Fabulous Magazine they're stronger than ever.

The actress, who played Kate Connor in Coronation Street , called the relationship "intense".

She said: "I can’t tell you how much stronger we are.

"It’s unbelievable how far we've come in such a short space of time. I like the way that we've not just gone back to our old ways but found ‘us’ again in a whole new light.

"It's a very intense love, like nothing I've ever felt, and I don’t want that to go away. So I’m not letting it go."
