Gareth Bale 'wants to go back to Tottenham' to end Real Madrid scrutiny, says Andros Townsend

Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale "wishes he was at Tottenham", claims former team-mate Andros Townsend.

Bale has won La Liga twice and the Champions League four times with the Spanish giants, but his relationship with head coach Zinedine Zidane is strained.

The Wales star recently requested to not be included in Madrid's travelling party to face Manchester City in the Champions League as he would not have played.

Bale came close to leaving last summer before president Florentino Perez pulled the plug at the last minute, and once again heads into this window amid specuation over his future.

A return to Spurs has been mooted previously, though Bale's reportedly salary of north or £600,000 a week makes any deal a non-starter.

But Townsend feels that's where Bale wants to be.

"I think if anything the Bale situation, he'd want to go back to Spurs," Townsend told talkSPORT. "The memories of Spurs. His happiness.

"He was the main man. He was loved. He was at the top of his game. So, if anything I think it would work the other way.

"He would be like 'I wish I was at Spurs now and had the freedom to do whatever I want. To express myself and not worry about where I am now where I get scrutinised for playing Golf.'"
