Gareth Bale opens up on the 'Wales, Golf, Madrid' flag celebration which upset Real Madrid fans

Gareth Bale has spoken for the first time about the 'Wales. Golf. Madrid' flag celebration which upset Real Madrid fans last year.

The Welsh players celebrated qualification for Euro 2020 as a fans' flag which read 'Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order' was waved by Bale's team-mates after the side's 2-0 win over Hungary at Cardiff in November.

Real's supporters did not take kindly to the images and Bale was heavily booed in his next game at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"We were just joking around," Bale said on the Hat-Trick podcast presented by the ICC (International Champions Cup).

"A few of them were saying 'if we do qualify, let's try to find it and bring it out. I was like, 'do what you want but I won't be going to get it'. They found it and brought it down.

"We were all celebrating as a team and I'm not not going to not jump around with my team-mates. It was a bit of banter, a bit of fun."
