Gareth Bale, Isco, Kylian Mbappe and the January transfer warning Newcastle should heed

Newcastle United need to avoid splashing their newfound riches on ageing stars who will not 'turn up' in their bid for Premier League survival.

That is the view of Liverpool legend Steve McManaman, who has listed a host of stars such as Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Isco and more as potential options for the Magpies.

Part owner Amanda Staveley has already stressed the club is unlikely to engage in the lavish spending spree commonly seen after a takeover in the upcoming January window.

However, United 's current predicament could encourage the new owners to act, with the Magpies sat second bottom and still winless this season.

New transfer targets are reported on an almost daily basis, with even superstars such as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe tentatively linked.

McManaman believes every agent will now be trying to pitch to Newcastle as a result of their overnight transformation into one of the world's richest clubs.

However, the former England winger believes there is a risk that the new owners could be tempted into overspending on a high-profile name who will not deliver on the pitch.

McManaman told Horseracing.net: “Newcastle just have to be very careful. Everybody in the world knows that.

"Every agent will be trying to push their players into Newcastle. Gareth Bale would be very interesting, of course he would, as he’s got a year left on his contract and he’s a super player.

"The only thing is whether he wants to come back to this country as he loves life in Madrid. Eden Hazard is now on the wrong side of 30. And you have to be very careful with Isco and Luka Jovic.

"I don’t think Isco is a Premier League player, he just lacks that little bit of pace. Marquee signings to me are the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

"You’ve got to be careful that you don’t pay older players lots of money and then they don’t turn up.”
