Gareth Bale injury update boosts Welshman's hopes of transfer away from Real Madrid

Gareth Bale expects to return to fitness before the transfer window shuts boosting his hopes of a potential escape route from Real Madrid.

Bale returned from international duty with Wales with a knee injury after starting both victories over Finland and Bulgaria.

He is now rehabilitating his injury at Madrid where he is being assessed.

But Mirror Sport understands Bale, 31, believes the injury is not too serious.

He went down in the second half of Sunday's 1-0 win over Bulgaria but completed the 90 minutes.

He has since returned to the La Liga champions where boss Zinedine Zidane didn't use him in Real's last eight games.

Bale has admitted he is open to leaving after almost going to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning a year ago.

The ex-Spurs ace still has two years left on his contract worth over £600,000-a-week.

But Bale has admitted he would consider his options this window, including any potential switches back to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid teammate and former Tottenham colleague Luka Modric has called for Bale to make a decision over his future.

“For almost 12 years we are playing together and it’s a difficult situation for him and for the club," Modric told The Times .

“Gareth needs to know what he wants to do. He is a grown man and needs to decide what is best for him.

“Does he feel happy here or does he want to try something else? But, for me, Gareth is still a great player and still has a lot to offer in football.

"It just depends on him, if he has enough hunger or desire to keep going. I think he has but whether his situation finishes here or continues, he can still be an important player.”

The transfer window shuts on October 5 in England and Spain.

Madrid are due to start their title defence on September 20 at Real Sociedad with Bale likely to be sidelined.
