Gareth Bale fitness latest ahead of Aston Villa as Ryan Mason confirms Tottenham question mark

Ryan Mason has stated he is "not sure" if Gareth Bale can start another game in quick succession for Tottenham.

Named in the starting XI on Sunday in the 2-0 win over Wolves at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Welshman played 89 minutes of the contest before he was replaced late on by Moussa Sissoko.

Now facing another game on Wednesday evening with Spurs hosting Aston Villa in the penultimate match of the campaign, Mason has a decision to make regarding his starting XI as he looks to keep his team fresh with a European place still up for grabs.

Asked about Bale's fitness heading into the Villa showdown, the 29-year-old has admitted that the attacker is a "question mark" for the match.

"I am not sure," said Mason when pressed on the player's fitness. "Gareth was probably the best I have seen him all season at the weekend. He was sharp, he was running at players, he has that confidence back of playing in repetitive games and he feels confident in his body. He also knows his body.

"He is a question mark for tomorrow. We are not sure whether or not he is going to be ready. It is down to the player, he is experienced enough. We'll see.

"Like it was with Serge [Aurier], if a player doesn't feel 100 per cent, I don't feel confident enough, we have enough players ready, enough players competing, that want to play.

"If a player doesn't feel 100 per cent and it is not right then he won't play."

Mason also confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game that Ben Davies again remains out through injury.

"Ben’s still out, Serge has returned to training with the group," he admitted.

"There’s a couple of question marks from the game at the weekend so we’re going to have to assess them in the morning and see how they’re feeling."
