Gareth Bale, Dayot Upamecano and the three other players Spurs are tipped to sign in January

Jose Mourinho is set to enter his first transfer window as Tottenham Hotspur boss as he hopes to strengthen their push for Champions League football.

Spurs head into the New Year with several key positions that need reinforcements.

Left-back remains an area of weakness in the squad, with Ben Davies injured, Danny Rose unfavoured and Ryan Sessegnon still developing as a Premier League footballer.

Similarly, with the future of Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen still to be resolved, there could be some movement in defence and midfield.

With all that in mind, here are the most likely players to make the move to north London in January, according to  SportNation .

Jose Mourinho on Christian Eriksen's future

Eberchi Eze - 7/4

Eberechi Eze has established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the Championship this season with Queens Park Rangers

With Eriksen's future unclear, Spurs could look at the 21-year-old as a potential diamond in the rough to replace him.

It seems only a matter of time before Eze makes his way into the Premier League and after watching James Maddison's meteoric rise from the second-tier, Tottenham could be tempted to take a chance on the young playmaker.

Gareth Bale - 3/1

Could it finally happen?

It would be the transfer that Tottenham fans have dreamt of for some years, if the club were to bring Gareth Bale back to Tottenham.

Over the last six months, things haven't improved for Bale at Real Madrid and he could still leave the club in January.

A move to China is firmly off the table after they introduced a wage cap, making a Premier League return most likely.

Having picked up Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in the summer, Tottenham could be set for another Ligue 1 raid.

This time, Lille's 20-year-old star Boubakary Soumare has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

The balance in the centre of midfield is still a conundrum Mourinho is trying to figure out and a move for the tall midfield anchor could be just the signing they need.

Gerson - 5/1

Another midfield addition, Gerson could add creativity to the engine room should Eriksen finally leave.

The Brazilian, on the books of FIFA Club World Cup finalist Flamengo, is only 22 years old and still has plenty of time on his side.

Having returned to South America this season his form has earned rave reviews as he helped Flamengo to their most successful season ever.

Dayot Upamecano - 5/1

Allegedly a first-choice target for rivals Arsenal, Upamecano could be the perfect replacement for Vertonghen.

The athletic French defender is only 21 but has impressed over several seasons for Red Bull Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

With Toby Alderweireld also ageing, Tottenham will have to invest in the heart of their defence and there are few options that look like a safer bet than Upamecano.
