Gareth Bale criticised as Jose Mourinho provides Tottenham transfer update ahead of deadline

Here is your Tottenham morning digest for Monday, February 1.

Mourinho's transfer update

Jose Mourinho has provided an update on Tottenham's deadline day dealings.

"I don’t expect, no," he said when asked if there will be movement on the final day of the window (today).

"Of course today was a day where I am disconnected from my bosses, I am disconnected from the club contacts, I am just focused on the game. But I don’t think so. I was not expecting anything to happen."

Asked about Gedson Fernandes' possible Galatasaray switch, he added: "No, honestly no, I don’t know.

"Until yesterday I didn’t know anything about it. So maybe now I will know, or tomorrow morning when I get to the training ground I will know. I am not saying to you ‘no’, I’m saying to you I don't know."

Spurs player ratings

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold rated the players following the defeat to Brighton. Here is a taster.

Hugo Lloris

Couldn't get near Trossard's first half goal but made a good reaction save to deny White not long before the hour mark. 6

Davinson Sanchez

Sacrificed at half-time for Vinicius. Hadn't done much wrong but he was the fall guy after such a poor half from Spurs. 5

Toby Alderweireld

Sloppy distribution at times and didn't look his usual composed self. However, he bumped himself up a point or two with a fantastic sliding block to deny Connolly who thought he had an open to fire into. 6

Joe Rodon

The young Welshman didn't cover himself in glory during the build-up to Trossard's goal, mostly ball watching, but didn't do too much wrong after that. 5

Moussa Sissoko

Started at wing-back and then became a right-back in the second half. Worked hard but doesn't have the attacking game to be a threat down the flank. 5

Souness slams Bale

Graeme Souness has not been impressed with Gareth Bale's desire since his Spurs return.

"I am looking at him, a world-class player, he comes back to the club he professes to love and it's as if he has been happy to sit on the bench," he said on Sky Sports.

"Now, if he is not happy with that, and that is what he was accused of at Real Madrid, if he is not happy, then be vocal about it, let the Spurs supporters know you are not happy and not getting enough minutes.

"This is a guy who was a genuine - and we don't know if he still is because we haven't seen enough of him - world-class footballer. At 31, this should be his peak years.

"I played my best football at 31. This should be his best years, coming back where he is much-loved. During games, subs are being made and the camera goes on him. He is not perturbed at not being one of the players going on.

"I don't care if they think he has a bad attitude, he should be saying 'I have come back to the club I love to play football'. That would be the road I would go down if I was him."
