Gareth Bale and Wales secure Euro 2020 golden ticket as they map another dream route to semi finals

Dogged Wales survived a nerve-shredding afternoon against Italy to secure second place in Group A and set up another knockouts adventure.

The narrow 1-0 defeat means they will face the runners-up of Group B in Amsterdam next Saturday with Finland and Russia the most likely sides to finish second behind Roberto Martinez's thrilling Belgium side.

Switzerland defeated Turkey 3-1 in the group's other match and Xherdan Shaqiri and Co's heroics will likely be enough to see them finish among the best of the rest as a third-place side.

The Dragons' Euro 2020 adventure has been a thrilling one just like it was five years ago when they reached the last four before Portugal broke their hearts.

Wales will fancy their chances in the last 16 and they would then face either the Netherland or a group runner up for a chance to replicate their heroics of France by making the last four.

Italy passed up a host of chances at the Stadio Olimpico but Gareth Bale was let ruing a golden chance in the 77th minute as he scooped an effort over the bar after Ethan Ampadu was sent off.

But despite the gut-wrenching wait, Switzerland were unable to score enough against Turkey to overturn the goal difference between the sides.
