Gareth Bale admits he doesn't know who the British prime minister is

Gareth Bale does not know who the British prime minister is.

The Real Madrid star has gained something of a reputation in Spain for an introvert who spends more time on the golf course than with his team-mates, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois nicknaming him 'the golfer'.

And, in an interview with the Telegraph , Bale's explanation of his apparent introversion as 'living in his own bubble' did lead to one interesting revelation.

"I genuinely don't know 99% of Brexit," he said, when asked about current affairs.

"I don't even know the prime minister is any more."

After being told it was Boris Johnson he replied: "Well, there we go. I didn't know that. I thought he was the mayor?

"I can't have a say in it so I'm not interested. I follow the golf, that's about it. I can tell you who's number one in the world."

In fairness to the Wales talisman, a sizable proportion of the population probably don't know about the full workings of Brexit - although you'd imagine most know that Johnson is the current inhabitant of 10 Downing Street.

Bale also gave an insight into what he'd like to do once he hangs up his boots, adding that he doesn't enjoy football as much as he did at the age of 18.

"People have their own preferences but I'd rather just decline away," said the 30-year-old.

"I don't want to keep promoting myself. When I finish I want a relaxed, quieter life."
