Gareth Anscombe finally kicks again as return date gets closer

Gareth Anscombe's return date is getting closer, with the Wales fly-half and Ospreys man revealing he can finally kick again.

Sharing a recovery update, the 30-year-old half-back was seen nailing two goal kicks on a training pitch.

"So grateful to be back doing what I love. Finally allowed to goal kick," the former Cardiff Blue wrote on Instagram on Saturday morning.

The 27-cap Wales international has been out of action since he damaged his knee ligaments during a World Cup warm-up game against England in August 2019.

James Hook, George North and Rhys Webb and Lloyd Williams were among those to congratulate the player on his latest recovery update.

It comes after Anscombe shared footage last month of himself on a training field running, twisting and starting to look like his old self.

The injury meant Warren Gatland's first-choice No. 10 missed the 2019 World Cup in Japan, is yet to feature for the Ospreys, and is yet to play for Wales under Wayne Pivac.

He has undergone three bouts of surgery along the recovery road, but his return date certainly looks to be edging closer.

Ospreys boss Toby Booth had previously said Anscombe could make his long-awaited debut during the PRO14 Rainbow Cup, but those chances were dealt a big blow in April 2021 when Booth revealed the player's return was "not on the very near horizon".
