Gardner Minshew wins Pepsi Rookie of the Week

After an admiral Week 1 performance that unfortunately didn’t result in a victory, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew has won the Pepsi Rookie of the Week award.

In his first-ever start, Minshew went 22-of-25 (88 percent) for 275 yards and two touchdowns after unexpectedly being forced into the lineup due to Nick Foles sustaining a broken collarbone. The injury occurred on the Jags’ second drive of the regular season when the veteran quarterback was brought down by Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones on a touchdown pass to DJ Chark.

Throughout the process of the game Minshew was able to complete his first 13 passes, making him the first player to do so since Brad Johnson in 1991. With Kyler Murray playing later in the day, Minshew was also the first rookie quarterback to take the field from the 2019 draft class.

With Foles set to miss up to Week 11, Week 2’s game against the Houston Texans will be Minshew’s first official start. If he can somehow manage to take down the great J.J. Watt and company, Minshew would be the first rookie quarterback of his class to acquire a win as a starter, which would send his already huge following into more of a frenzy.
