Gardiner Haskins' historic soapworks factory building to be turned into homes and offices

Historic Bristol retailer Gardiner Haskins has sold off the old soapworks factory which it occupied for 60 years.

The grade II-listed building has been snapped up by a property developer for an undisclosed sum and is set to be transformed into homes, offices, cafes and restaurants.

Developers First base are planning to spend £175million on the mixed-use scheme.

First Base says it plans to work “closely” with Bristol City Council and architects Woods Bagot to deliver a “vibrant new district”.

Barry Jessup, director at First Base, said: "Soapworks has a rich history and has been at the heart of Bristol’s economy for generations.

"Our vision is to revitalise the area creating a mix of modern workspace, homes and amenities which respond to local need and Bristol’s emergence as a popular destination for business and leisure travellers.

"This is a rare opportunity to create a new district in one of the UK’s most dynamic cities."

The property was originally a factory belonging to Christopher Thomas & Brothers, which manufactured soap and candles, and dates back to the 1860s.

The building was occupied by Gardiner Haskins from 1958 until December 2018, when the retailer moved into the Brunel Rooms on Broad Plain.

The move was part of a big restructure which saw Gardiner Haskins downsize and open a luxury kitchen, bathroom and bedroom store opposite.

Cllr Paul Smith, Bristol City Council cabinet member for housing, told Insider Media: "We are delighted to welcome developers First Base to Bristol and we look forward to working together to maximise the potential of these important buildings.

"Their investment in the city will deliver a genuine mix of homes (including affordable housing), jobs for local people and useable public spaces."

Gardiner Haskins has been contacted for comment.
