Visit this

If you lack green space in which to contemplate, pray or simply sit in silence, the Quiet Garden Movement may be just what you are looking for. This charity has on its books more than 300 gardens across the globe that open regularly to visitors looking for a break from hustle and bustle.

Sow this

Provided you can offer a bit of shelter with a greenhouse or cold frame, now is a fine time to sow sweet peas. Cardboard toilet roll tubes make good starter pots: gather some in a seed tray, fill three-quarters full with seed compost and a handful of horticultural grit. Don’t bother chitting or nicking the seed, just sow one seed per tube and cover with 1-2cm of compost. Cover with newspaper until they germinate.

Plant this

Looking for an unusual, productive tree for the garden? Consider quince ‘Vranja’: there’s pretty pink blossom in spring and fragrant fruits in October. It needs a sheltered south- or west-facing spot and is self-fertile. Height and spread: 4m x 4m. Buy one bareroot tree for £26.99 or two for £44.98 (including free p&p). To order, call 0330 333 6856, quoting ref GU463, or go to our Readers’ Offers page. Dispatched November to December.
