Tulipa Mariola
Plant the big and blowsy tulip ‘Mariola’

If you’ve been growing sunflowers, the butterflies and bees have had their turn, and now it’s time to let the birds loose on them. Once the back of the flower head is turning yellowy brown, cut it down with a few centimetres of stem, hang upside down somewhere airy to dry, then place in the forks of trees for birds to feast on.

My local apple is the Laxton’s Superb – what’s yours? Dozens of gardens across Britain are holding apple events this weekend as part of the annual apple day celebrations, so it’s the perfect time to ditch shrink-wrapped supermarket fruit and discover our diverse (and tasty) apple heritage. Visit orchardnetwork.org.uk to find your local event.

If you like your tulips big and blowsy, look no further than ‘Mariola’. This fully double May-flowering tulip has peony-like blooms that will last up to 10 days in a vase. Buy 16 bulbs for £12.99 or 32 for £17.98 (prices include UK mainland p&p). To order, call 0330 333 6856, quoting reference GU258, or go to our Readers’ Offers page. Delivery this month.
