Gardens: what to do this week

What to do this week: Astrantia Roma
‘Astrantia ‘Roma’ has been the darling of the Chelsea flower show for years.’

Pot this

A sprinkle of chives will zhoosh up humdrum winter dishes. Dig up a clump from the garden, pot with multipurpose compost and move to a bright indoor windowsill for easy access. Or buy a pot of supermarket chives and divide between a few pots (keep in a shaded spot outside for a week, to acclimatise to lower light levels).

Darkness transforms the most prosaic of gardens into a magical place. Until next Sunday, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has opened its doors to evening visitors, illuminating their way with a spectacular trail of light effects and installations; tickets from rbge.org.uk/botaniclights.

Plant this

Astrantia ‘Roma’ has been the darling of the Chelsea flower show for years, its pink pincushion flowers dotted among purple alliums and foxglove spires for an early summer spectacle. It thrives in moist soil in sun or partial shade. Height and spread: 75cm x 45cm. Order three bareroot plants for £13.99, or six for £21.98 (including free UK mainland p&p). To order, call 0330 333 6856, quoting ref GU262, or go to our Reader Offers page. Delivery November 2014.
