Gardens: rhododendrons - in pictures

Rhododendron ponticum
Rhododendrons owe much of their bad reputation to the garish and habitat-stealing R. ponticum, but there are plenty of other rhododendrons with blooms of delicate whites, pinks and pale yellows: these are more likely to harmonise with their neighbours. Photograph: shapencolour/Alamy
Rhododendrons: Tom Hoblyn's Cornish memories garden at the Chelsea flower show 2011
Garden designer Tom Hoblyn used Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' in his Homebase: Cornish Memories garden at Chelsea Flower Show 2011 because they made a perfect partner for the silvery granite paving. 'Koichiro Wada' is covered in exquisite, almost translucent apple-blossom-pink flowers. Photograph: Rex Richardson/Alamy
Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White'
Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White' has rose-pink buds that open white with a greenish speckles above the stamens. Unlike many rhododendrons, this cultivar is happy growing in neutral soil. Photograph: Alamy
Rhododendron augustinii
Rhododendron augustinii is another species that will tolerate neutral soil as well as acid soil. Photograph: Alamy
Rhododendron falconeri ssp eximium
One of Tom Hoblyn's favourite rhododendrons is R. falconeri ssp eximium, which sports wrinkly, silvery leaves with cinnamon backs, surrounding dense trusses of foxglove-shaped creamy flowers. Photograph: Alamy
