Calibrachoa 'Superbells Lemon Slice' These dainty relations of the petunia were introduced from South America in the 1980s, and have since been developed from sprawling and sparsely flowered to neat and prolific. ‘Lemon Slice’, from Japan, makes a lovely specimen basket; the flowers are small and its profusion is never overwhelming. Unlike earlier varieties, it’s resistant to soil diseases. Opening from lime green buds, the large, nodding blooms are held on contrasting, purple stems, and set against rich, green leaves. Ideal climbing through a mature shrub or on a trellis by the door, where you can appreciate the scent. Popular with bees, and best in well-drained soil. Buy fromthompson-morgan.comPhotograph: Thompson & Morgan
Petunia 'Eliza' This is the latest in the Tumbelina series of double-flowered petunias for baskets and tubs. The semi-double ‘Peach Drift’ and the white-centred single ‘Pink Drift’ are resistant to black spot, powdery mildew and rust. They’re also good tumbling over a low wall. The downside? No scent. It carries its long dark leaves on shorter stems so they don’t topple as they mature, and it doesn’t bolt. Plant 14 sets per metre of row and it will produce 60-90mm onions. It does not suffer from bacterial problems, and the sets have been heat-treated against bolting. Expect 1kg per plant across the two harvests, or cut the plants down in spring for a later 2kg crop. This white-flowered runner brings genes from french beans, which are less fussy about setting; ‘Stardust’ has better pod set, and a heavier crop of longer stringless beans than earlier varieties of this type. Their resistance to disease has transformed tomato growing: couple that with a cherry tomato so tasty that it came top in blind taste tests involving hundreds of tasters, and you have a winner.
