Gardening expert shares 'natural' 20p item to stop slugs and snails from ruining plants

Many keen gardeners will be excited to get into their back yards and prepare the space for the fast-approaching arrival of summer.

However, all of that enthusiasm can be quickly washed away when your first round of plants are eaten by slugs and snails.

However, an expert has shared some clever ways to banish the pests, one of which will only put you back 20p, reports the Mirror.

Horticulturalist Adam Pasco has shared different ways to control pests "naturally and without resorting to harmful chemicals" in a video for B&Q.

The expert said slugs and snails love to eat tender new shoots, and to combat this, the expert recommends using barrier grit or sharp sand around growing plants.

If you sprinkle it around the plants it will "stop the slugs and snails crawling over the soil surface and reaching the plants to protect them from attack."

A bag of 20kg of grit can be purchased from The Range for just £4.99, working out at 20p for 1kg, which should suffice for numerous plants.

Another method he used to exterminate slugs and snails was to fill jam jars with salty water and place them in it - or you could place them in another area of the garden where there are no plants.

Copper rings can also be used to deter slugs. These can be bought from garden centres or online and fixed to pots and containers.
