Garden waste collections suspended in South Gloucestershire due to staff shortages

South Gloucestershire Council isn't collecting garden waste this week due to staff shortages.

It comes after North Somerset Council suspended its green waste collections due to a number of staff having to self-isolate and weather conditions resulting in heat exhaustion.

South Gloucestershire Council says it is aiming for catch-up collections next week.

Garden waste is usually collected every fortnight in South Gloucestershire.

The council said in a statement: “We are unable to collect garden waste recycling this week (26-30 July) due to staff shortages and the need to prioritise black bin and recycling collections.

“We are aiming for catch up collections next week, however if this becomes an ongoing issue we will look at adding extra weeks onto your subscription.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

It follows a temporary suspension on green waste collection during the first wave of the virus last year.

But Covid-19 continues to impact waste collections in our region.

Bristol Waste halted the collection of green bins and sacks at the beginning of this month due to “a national driver shortage and the continued impacts of Covid-19.” It had 28 collectors in self-isolation.

South Gloucestershire recorded 109 further Covid infections in the latest 24 hour period, bringing the total number of cases in the area to 22,506.

And while Covid cases are slowly decreasing, the lifting of restrictions in England has seen hundreds of thousands of workers being told to self isolate.
