Weeds can be incredibly annoying for those who take pride in having a healthy-looking garden. They aren't just unsightly, but they also steal water and nutrients away from other plants.
They can quickly take over your garden space, so it's important to see to them as soon as possible to avoid them wreaking too much havoc.
Luckily, there are several things you can do to get rid of them – and they don't have to cost you a fortune.
Fiona Jenkins at Myjobquote.co.uk, the UK's leading trades matching site, has shared some of the most effective methods of getting with of weeds using items you already have in your kitchen.
Firstly, if you have a lemon you can easily kill the weeds. Fiona told The Mirror: "Cut a lemon in half and then squeeze the juice over the weed.
"The citric acid in the lemon should kill your weed within a few days. This method is especially effective when there is strong sun shining on the lawn.
"The lemon juice can be used as it is, there is no need to dilute it. Alternatively, you can get some powdered citric acid and mix this with water in a spray bottle. Then, simply spray the weed with the solution."
Another effective way of killing weeds is salt. All you need to do is sprinkle it liberally over the weeds and leave it – and in a few days it should have killed them.
Fiona added: "Salt is also great for deterring insects and slugs."
However, she warned: "Be careful not to sprinkle the salt on the surrounding lawn and this could kill off some of the grass."
One solution, that works best for weeds that get a lot of sunlight, is using an item many people have in their kitchen cupboards – vodka.
Fiona explained: "Create a mixture of one part vodka and two parts water. Then, add a couple of drops of liquid dish soap to the solution. Put this solution in a spray bottle for easier application.
"Spray the solution directly onto the weed and this will dry the weed out and kill it off. Be sure to avoid spraying the solution on the surrounding grass as it will also dry out your grass and make it look quite unappealing."
