Garden club bids to transform Ayr's Wallacetown as residents lead project to improve area

A determined group of residents have set up a gardening club to help try and transform their area.

Their aim – to make Wallacetown in Ayr "more colourful" – will use a love of all things nature as a way of connecting with others in the community.

Those behind the project are being supported in their work by a cross-party alliance involving police, fire and council chiefs.

It all comes as part of a bid to clean up the image of the neighbourhood and promote everything that is good about Wallacetown.

Inspector Jason Peter is project lead with the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit and is tasked with working in the area to help bring about a positive change.

He said: “We recently sought the feedback of residents in Wallacetown through a community survey – while the full results are still being analysed a key theme was residents wanting to get involved in gardening as part of their hopes to improve the area.

“We have had around 20 different residents coming forward in the first three weeks and the work they have completed not only looks great but is the start of something big.

“Their ideas and hopes to expand this type of group to tackle other issues in the area are brilliant.

"It is key that residents drive change in their own community and have the ability to influence decisions being made that affect their lives.

“We look forward to working with residents in the weeks and months ahead.”

The group meets at the junction of Russell Drive and King Street every Thursday from 10am to midday and all are welcome.
