Garden bin permits now £40 a year after Dundee councillors approve price hike

Dundee residents who want garden waste uplifted from their house will now have to pay £40 a year for the privilege after a price hike was approved by elected members.

The garden waste tariff, first introduced in 2020, will increase from £35 to £40 from March.

Dundee City Council says the increase is necessary to reflect the additional costs involved in collecting garden waste once a fortnight, 20 times a year, which it is no longer required to do by law.

Locals can still dispose of garden waste for free if they transport it themselves to either of the city's recycling centres at Riverside and Baldovie.

Tony Boyle, the council's head of environment, told councillors on Monday night the change was needed "in order to cover the increase in costs of delivering the garden waste service."

Those costs, he said, included "staffing, transport, processing and the supply of bins and permits."

Elected members approved the plans.

Scottish recycling guidelines state that councils should provide kerbside collection for paper, plastic, metal, cans and food waste, along with either kerbside collection or community bins for glass.

There is no requirement to provide collection for garden waste - meaning council bosses now see it as an additional service, at an additional cost.

However, some have reacted with anger to the news that they will have to pay more.

Writing on Dundee City Council's Facebook page, one local said: "No! It is a bin that I only use intermittently as I also compost garden waste. Another £5 is too much!"

Another said: "Does the council need reminding of what we have just been through?

"Why can't they show some leniency and delay for a couple of years?"

A third added: "Really the cost should be lowered to encourage use of the bins. You can't ask people to recycle then expect them to pay for the privilege."
