Gardai warn public to avoid multiple areas countrywide as sun lovers throng beaches

Gardai are warning people to avoid certain beaches in Mayo and Wicklow at the moment as large crowds have filled all available parking spaces.

Crowds are expected at coastal spots countrywide this weekend as temperatures soar as high as 28C in places.

But on Saturday afternoon, many spots have already filled to capacity with gardai sending out a warning.

Taking to Twitter, gardai said: "Gardaí have noted significant traffic congestion at various beaches and beauty spots on the Mayo coast. The following areas should be avoided due to heavy traffic, as car parks are at capacity:

- Old Head Beach

- Roonah Pier

- Silver Strand

- Carramore.

"Gardaí have also noted significant traffic congestion along the Wicklow coast. The following areas should be avoided as traffic is moving very slowly and car parks are at capacity:

- Brittas Bay

- Magheramore. "

Luckily if people can't make it to the beach today, Met Eireann are forecasting no end in sight for the stunning heatwave gracing shores currently.

Another day of 27C heat is expected on Sunday, and it looks like temperatures will hit 27C on both Monday and Tuesday, with 28C forecast for Wednesday.

The forecaster added: "High pressure bringing predominantly dry, very warm and mostly sunny weather for much of next week. Remaining very warm and humid at night also."
