Gardai warn over new 'grandparent scam' catching people out with one county particularly targeted

The public is being warned over a new ‘grandparent scam’ that is seeing some unlucky people being conned out of money.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about a number of tricky scams, and some people are still working with banks and gardai to reclaim sums of cash.

The latest fraudulent activity reported involves criminals contacting grandparents from an unknown number purporting to be from a grandchild.

They’re saying they have lost their phone and need money urgently but ask their grandparent not to tell anyone what they’ve said.

Garda Grainne Doherty explained that Donegal is being targeted by the scams over recent weeks, and asked people not to ”take a chance" by replying to any suspicious messages.

She said: “If you don’t know a number then leave it and if it’s urgent the person will contact you directly and you can make a decision then.”

The public is also warned to remain vigilant to other active scams over text, phone calls, and email.

Never give out your personal details and always check with your bank if you receive an unexpected message from them regarding a payment or debt.

Scammers have also reportedly begun removing small amounts from people banks to go unnoticed and will then remove a lump sum if they are not caught out.

Make sure to report any suspicious behaviour to your bank and gardai at the earliest point for the best chance of getting your money back.
