Gardai warn over Bank of Ireland and An Post scams as public advised to be alert for key signs

People across Ireland are advised to stay aware of attempts by fraudsters to part them with their hard-earned cash or personal information.

Gardai are warning that messages from scammers "just keep coming and coming" as people continue to get caught out.

The most common 'phishing' attempts come from groups or individuals pretending to be from financial institutions, delivery companies and government departments.

Thousands of people have been caught out already this year, with Bank of Ireland customers recently informed again about how to spot fraudulent text messages.

In a new update on Monday, gardai issued an update about another attempt to get people to click on malicious links, this time with messages pretending to be from customs officials and An Post.

Gardai for the Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow regions said: "They just keep coming and coming. Some phones are recognising many of the scam 'phishing texts' that are doing the rounds.

"This is a useful feature, and was noticed on a Huawei Android device and puts these in a 'spam folder'.

"In the meantime, stay vigilant and beware the dreaded links.

"Beware also that these scam texts can insert themselves amongst legitimate texts from a legitimate source, Bank of Ireland reported this recently with their BoI texts.

"Note also that where customs are looking for payment through An Post, there is no link and you are told to go to your local post office or online but NO link is provided.

"Stay safe."
