Gardai warn of 'obvious' driving rule in current weather that many people are breaking

Gardai are urging motorists to be aware of an important driving rule as the unusual weather conditions continue.

Met Eireann issued several fog warnings over the past few days, the most recent of which covered the entire country until 11am on Monday.

The fog can often lead to poor visibility and dangerous driving conditions on the roads.

Despite the hazardous conditions, it seems many motorists are ignoring one basic road safety regulation.

Despite the "obvious" rule, gardai reiterated to drivers that they need to switch on their dipped headlights and fog lamps when there's poor visibility.

Other road users, including walkers and cyclists, also have a responsibility to ensure they can be seen in the foggy weather.

Gardai for the Waterford/Kilkenny/Carlow region said: "To state the absolute obvious, it's very foggy in places so please switch on your dipped headlamps and fog lamps if fitted.

"Pedestrians, Cyclists and other road users also have a responsibility to ensure that they can be seen, so high vis clothing and lamps/torches are the order of the day.
