Gardai warn of light law that motorists are frequently breaking with heavy fines to be handed out

Gardai have warned motorists to make sure they are following the rules when it comes to headlights - with a potential fine of €2,000 if they aren't.

The warning comes specifically for people with LED front headlights, which dazzle some other motorists.

The special lights are used mostly in farm vehicles or building machinery, as they provide great light to work in while undertaking projects at night time or in unclear conditions.

But, as gardai pointed out over the weekend, they are prohibited for road use.

A spokesperson explained: "One of the huge boons for today's motorists has been the great technological leaps made to vehicle lightning. We now take for granted Daytime Running Lights, powerful LED headlamps in some cars and huge strides in reflector and lenses.

"LED lamps have also been of great benefit to Agricultural Contractors and in other off road and site settings. LED light bars provide phenomenal light for such applications but they are NOT for road use.

"They dazzle oncoming motorists and prevent a proper view of the front number plate. We are coming across motorists using these on the road on a regular basis and have cautioned multiple drivers in recent months. Unfortunately the message is not really being taken in so legal sanctions follow."

And the punishments if you're caught using them can be hefty.

Under the Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations Act of 1963, officers can hit you with a €1,000 fine for your first offence.

But if you don't learn your lesson then and there and continue to use them, a second offence will see the fine double to €2,000.

The spokesperson continued: "All lights must be the same intensity and illuminate 325ft in front of vehicle."
