Gardai 'want stop' to supermarket specials in Aldi and Lidl

Gardai reportedly want to put a stop to customer specials at supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl.

With garden and BBQ offers in both retailers last week, there had been huge queues forming outside both stores.

And gardai reportedly want these specials to be cancelled due to the social distancing problems they can create, the Herald reports.

Both supermarkets are believed to have been contacted by Government representatives regarding the use of specials in the last few days.

In a statement regarding the specials last week a Lidl spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "As with all our non-food promotions, these items were ordered and planned nearly a year in advance of sale.

"Unfortunately due to the unforeseen circumstances we as a country are now experiencing, we have seen a rapid increase in the level of demand for our gardening promotion this week that we simply could not have anticipated for at the time of ordering.

"We apologise to customers who have been disappointed, and we ask them to be respectful towards our employees who have no control over product availability and are continuing to work hard to provide food and other essential supplies to communities across the country in this challenging time."

Lidl's Monday special did not go ahead following the government advice.

An Aldi spokesperson did not comment when contacted last week.

The chain did however make one change to stores in recent days, with normal shopping hours now resuming.

Aldi's 142 Irish stores will be open from 9am to 10pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm Saturday and Sunday from May 7 onwards.

A statement said: "Store opening hours had been temporarily shortened to help support staff who have been working tirelessly to serve customers and keep stores at their best every day during heightened demand."
