Gardai issue checkpoint reminder ahead of weekend of warm weather

Gardaí will be undertaking a series of house checks on people entering the country who are reported as breaking the rules

Detectives have already conducted house calls in relation to people who entered the State without the required PCR tests.

Failure to comply with the relevant public health regulation- is an offence and the person may be subject to prosecution, punishable by a fine not exceeding €2,500 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or both.

Where Gardaí determine there has been a breach a file will be submitted to the DPP for directions in each case.

Gardai have also called on people to consider not bringing their car if they are planning to visit the Phoenix Park in Dublin this weekend.

Car congestion has become an issue in the Phoenix Park in recent weeks as people flock to the Dublin beauty spot amid the upturn in weather.

The Office of Public Works reported that the park was “extremely busy” last Sunday with all car parks “near capacity” at about lunch time.

After a Garda request, and in a bid to control numbers going to the park, the Chapelizod Gate was closed until 6pm.

With further spells of sunny weather forecast this weekend, gardai are appealing to people planning to visit the Phoenix Park over the coming days to walk, run or cycle instead of driving as parking is limited.

They are also urging people to only visit the park if it is within their 5km exercise limit as laid out under Covid-19 regulations.

In a message shared on their Twitter account, gardai said: "Should you be thinking of visiting the Phoenix Park over the weekend, along with Fingal County County, Dublin City Council & OPW we are appealing to people to walk/run/cycle if it is within their 5km exercise limit as parking is limited."

The Phoenix Park Twitter account has also urged people to "leave the car at home" where possible and ensure that parking spaces are left “for those who really need it”.

They asked the public not to drive to the park and they advised them to plan their visit outside of peak hours in an effort to prevent large crowds gathering in the area during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, gardai have also announced that they are operating a policing plan this afternoon in Dublin city centre and warned commuters that a number of traffic diversions are currently in place.

A message shared on the official garda Twitter page read: "Gardai are operating a policing plan Dublin city centre this afternoon.

"A number of traffic diversions and other policing plans are currently in place. Those who are conducting their essential journeys may meet obstructions on their journey and will need to avail of diversions."
