Gardai 'travel to Romania' to quiz suspect over Cork murder of Frankie Dunne

Gardai investigating the murder of Frankie Dunne last December have reportedly traveled to Romania to interview a man suspected of having information regarding the killing.

It's believed four detectives and a Romanian member of the Gardai flew to Bucharest on January 15 to interview a man who had been living in Cork but had returned to Romania at the end of December last year.

Gardai made contact with police in the man's hometown and asked them to assist with their inquiries through Europol.

The 29-year-old man then presented himself voluntarily to his local police station to answer questions from Romanian police on behalf of An Garda Siochana, Red FM news reports.

The man also gave forensic samples to Gardai which will now be tested for a match to samples found at the scene of the homeless man's murder.

The remains of Francis 'Frankie' Dunne are carried from Saint Mary's on the Hill Church, Knocknaheeney, Cork (Michael Mac Sweeney/Provision)

The Gardai have said that they expect a statement from their Romanian colleagues in the next few weeks which will then be included in a file sent to the DPP.

It was reported at the time that the suspect may have taken a flight from Belfast to Edinburgh and then on to Eastern Europe in the days following the murder of the the 64 year old father and grandfather.

Mr Dunne was found in the rear garden of a derelict house on the Boreenmanna Road on the southside of the city at 4pm on December 28 last, CorkBeo reports.

The grim discovery of a body with limbs and head detached was made by a local homeowner who had gone into the garden of the derelict house to look for a missing family pet.
