Gardai to be given powers to issue house party fines

Gardai are set to be given powers to fine house party hosts or those looking to attend one.

The Government has agreed to amend the Health Act 1947 to be able to introduce a new system of fines that could see officers issuing homeowners with fixed charge notices if they are hosting an illegal gathering.

While gardai will still not be allowed to legally enter a property, they could call to homes and ask those gathering to disperse.

If those people do not leave, the occupier of the home will be issued with a fine.

Also on the table are fines for people who gardai suspect are on the way to a house party or are waiting for one to begin and who refuse to leave the area when asked.

The fine amount has not yet been finalised.

The 1947 Act deals with legislation around precautions against infections.

The proposal was developed by ministers Helen McEntee and Stephen Donnelly and is reportedly based on the idea that house parties are a source of transmission for Covid-19.

Under Level Five of lockdown rules, there should be no visits to other homes or gardens.

While it's possible to meet with one other household in an outdoor setting, such as a park, no other social or family gatherings should take place.

However, those living alone can form a 'support bubble' with another household, allowing them to essentially become part of that household.
