Gardai have issued a warning about personalised tags on children's schoolbags that make the name of that particular child visible and easily identifiable.
Officers said "a child will automatically presume that anyone who knows their name is not a stranger."
Gardai also said that personalised pencil cases, stickers, books and other stationery that might include the name of a young child are fine as they are not visible.
In a post that was shared on social media, the Gardai said: "That time of year is upon us all again and we are out buying bits and pieces for back to school in September.
"When buying a school bag for your child please do not have any personalisations added with their name visible. A child will automatically presume that anyone who knows their name is not a stranger.
"There are so many choices out there from personalised pencil cases to stickers for books with the child's name added and that is fine as they won't be seen when the child is travelling to and from school."
Much like the last few months, despite the presence of Covid and the Delta variant, almost one million primary and secondary school children around the country will return to school over the coming weeks.
The routine measures like hand-washing, maintaining physical distance, practising good hygiene and cough etiquette and enhanced cleaning measures will be in place.
Primary school students will not be required to wear a mask while in class with cloth face coverings not bring considered suitable for children under the age of 13.
Elsewhere, a number of portable CO2 monitors will be prevalent in schools around Ireland with an increased emphasis on indoor ventilation.
