Gardai tackle man armed with knife during shop robbery in Tallaght, Dublin

Brave gardai tackled a man armed with a knife as he attempted to rob a shop in Tallaght, Dublin.

The scary robbery happened just after 6pm this evening in the Castletymon shopping centre located close to Tymon Park in Tallaght.

The man threatened staff in the shop and managed to steal money, but was stopped and tackled by gardai who were patrolling the area at the time.

He is currently being held at Tallaght garda station after being arrested by gardai.

A garda spokeswoman said: "A man in his early 40s has been arrested by Gardaí following a robbery at a premises in Castletymon Shopping Centre.

"Shortly after 6p.m. this evening, Monday 20th January, 2020 a man armed with a knife entered a shop and threatened staff before leaving on foot with a sum of money. 

"Gardaí from the Tallaght district drugs unit were patrolling the area and tackled the man to the ground.  The man threatened Gardaí with his knife but was arrested at the scene. The sum of cash stolen was also recovered.

"The suspect is currently detained under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984 for questioning at Tallaght Garda station.

"No persons were injured during the incident and investigations are ongoing."
