Gardai swarm to scene after 'shots fired' near busy Irish town

Gardai rushed to Shannon Town on Wednesday morning after shots were allegedly fired by a member of the public.

The shocking incident happened in the Illaunmanagh area, just minutes away from the town centre, at 11am.

Gardai rushed to the scene after reports that a gun had been discharged, but thankfully nobody was injured.

Officers later carried out a search of the same area, where they discovered a suspected firearm.

Investigators are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí investigating an alleged discharge of a firearm this morning, January 13, 2021 in Illaunamanagh, Shannon, Co. Clare are appealing for witnesses.

"At around 11am, Gardaí received a report alleging that a firearm had been discharged in the Illaunamanagh area.

"No injuries or damage to property was reported following the incident.

"As part of the investigation Gardaí later carried out a search of the area resulting in the seizure of a suspected firearm, which will now be sent for examination.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was on the area of between 10.30am and 11.30am, particularly road users with camera footage, to contact Shannon Garda Station on 061-365900, The Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

"No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing."
