Gardai stunned as driver ploughs into roundabout right in front of them

Gardaí were left stunned after seeing a motorist plough into a roundabout right in front of them on Monday.

Meath Roads Policing were on patrol at the time when they observed a vehicle collide head-on with the roundabout.

After observing the incident, the driver was then asked to take a roadside breath test which they failed.

It was later discovered at a nearby Garda station that the driver was three times over the legal limit.

The motorist has since been arrested.

As part of Level 5 restrictions, gardai have created checkpoints across the country and they're in operation on main routes and motorways.

In a statement, Gardai said: “For those who must make essential journeys, we are asking them to be mindful that there is a good possibility they will have to go through a checkpoint during the course of their journey.”

Gardaí have also introduced a range of measures during the Level 5 restrictions including a large number of static and rolling checkpoints and high visibility and community engagement patrols.

The extra deployment is aimed at ensuring compliance with public health guidelines and regulations following the Government’s decision that the country should move to Level 5 under the Framework for Living with COVID-19.
