Gardai storm 'house parties of up to 30 people' in series of raids across Ireland

Gardai stormed house parties of up to 30 people in a series of raids across Ireland over the weekend.

Officers handed out more than 150 fines to people attending a number of house parties in locations including Dublin, Sligo, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Westmeath, Limerick, Cork and Tipperary.

Some of these parties saw large groups of up to 30 people in attendance.

Meanwhile hundreds of Dublin Airport passengers were also hit with a big fine after being caught trying to leave the country.

The €100 fines were issued to a staggering 280 people between Thursday and Sunday of last week.

The current Level Five coronavirus restrictions mean you cannot leave the country for non-essential reasons.

And from today, the same offence will result in a €500 fine being handed out.

A total of four people arrived in the airport without a valid PCR test on Sunday, contrary to the current regulations.

An Garda Siochana's Deputy Commissioner for Policing and Security, John Twomey, said: "The vast majority of people continue to comply with the public health regulations. In doing so, they are protecting themselves and others.

"However, some people continue to engage in behaviour that puts themselves, their loved ones, their colleagues and their neighbours at risk of catching COVID-19.

"At this stage, no-one can say they aren’t fully aware of the public health advice and the potential dangers - including death and serious illness – of not following that advice.

"People need to stay home. Only make essential journeys. Limit social contacts. Practice social distancing and wash their hands."
