Gardai stop number of Dublin drivers attempting to leave city during restrictions

Gardai in Kildare stopped a number of drivers from Dublin at a border checkpoint on Tuesday.

Officers say they met a number of Dubliners at a checkpoint who were leaving the county but not for essential reasons.

Gardai said they encouraged them to turn back and that compliance with their advice was high.

A number of other drivers were stopped at the same checkpoint in Naas for road offences.

A garda spokesperson said: "Naas Roads Policing Unit on Operation Fanacht Checkpoints in the County today seized 4 vehicle for No Insurance Tax and Learner Driver Unaccompanied.

"One of these motorists broke a red light and was arrested for Drug Driving 'Cannabis'– One Further motorist was also arrested for Drug Driving - 'Cocaine'.

"Some motorists questioned were not on essential journeys outside of Dublin and were engaged and encouraged to turn around and go home -Compliance levels were excellent in this area."

With Dublin currently in level three of the Covid alert system, people are not allowed leave the country unless it is for an essential reason.

This is to continue for two and a half more weeks when it will be reviewed by NPHET and the Government.
