Gardai stop 'drug-driver' on footpath in crashed car with 'offensive weapon'

Gardai in Tipperary arrested a motorist that was caught driving a crashed car along a pedestrian pathway in Cahir.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night and the driver also tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. An 'offensive weapon' was also found in the vehicle.

In a statement, the Gardai said: "Last night, Cahir Gardai stopped a crashed vehicle which was driving on rims along the pedestrian walkway to the Swiss Cottage. The driver - who was disqualified as per our Mobility App - tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. A small quantity of cannabis and prescription drugs were located in the vehicle as well as an offensive weapon."

Gardai have confirmed that the driver was arrested and the car was also seized because it had no insurance, license, NCT or tax.

With Operation Fanacht still in place, the Gardai continues to implement static and roving checkpoints to check on compliance with travel restrictions.

The public is being asked to stay at home unless they have a reasonable excuse for travel. Earlier this week, the Gardai confirmed that more than 3,500 fines have been issued for breaches of Covid-19 public health regulations.

Aside from this, over the weekend, Gardaí intervened at house parties in Dublin, Sligo, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Westmeath, Limerick, Cork, Tipperary, with in excess of 150 fines issued for either organising or attending a house party.

This included some house parties with large groups of up to 30 people at each party.
