Gardai spot 'dangerous' bonnet feature and warn motorists of threat to pedestrians

Gardai have warned motorists to think before they modify bonnets after a "dangerous" decoration was spotted in Kilkenny.

Officers saw a car with a pointy figurine sticking out the front which they deemed would be dangerous if the vehicle collided with a pedestrian.

A garda social media post said: "This bonnet decoration was spotted on a vehicle on High Street Kilkenny yesterday. No doubt the owner hasn't fully thought it through though. The steel sharp object would seriously injure a pedestrian even at a modest speed. In fact if you were to fall against it, you might also be injured. Similarly, unnecessary

"Bull bars for vehicles not in the Agri sector also may cause additional injury to pedestrians if fitted. Think safety, think before you modify, remember we all share the road space but some users are more vulnerable than other."

In response to a social media user who defended bull bars, the gardai said: "If they strike a pedestrian regardless of who is in the right or wrong most motorists would far rather have their vehicle destroyed rather than another fatality on our roads. Metal and Machinery can be replaced, lives can't."
