Gardai slam motorist who breaks 200km/h as they list dozens of drivers caught speeding

One motorist hit speeds of over 200km/h on National Slow Down Day with more checks on roads than ever.

The reckless speeder was stopped on the M50 on Friday morning having being clocked at 202km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The driver was one of hundreds that have been stopped by gardai already during the 24 hour iniative.

Speaking about the M50 driver a garda spokesperson said: "Motorist detected travelling at 202km on the M50 this morning now faces a hefty fine and possible disqualification from driving. Excessive speed contributes to serious injuries and fatalities."

As of 12:30pm 44,105 vehicles had their speeds recorded with 349 vehicles detected travelling in excess of the applicable limit.
