Gardai slam group of up to 80 young people caught flouting restrictions in Co Offaly

Gardai caught a group of up to 80 young people flouting restrictions in Co Offaly on Sunday evening.

A group had gathered at the banks of the Camcor River at Sandymount with little regard for social distancing.

A picture from the gathering shows people standing in large groups of far more than four people.

Current restrictions state that people should not meet in groups of more than four outside and they must maintain a two metre social distance.

Gardai also slammed the youths for leaving the area in a state with cans and cardboard boxes everywhere.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Birr and Portlaoise had to deal with situations yesterday that at any other time is wrong but even worse in the current climate.

"Up to 80 local young people gathered on the banks of the Camcor River Sandymount. This is what is left behind.

"In Derryounce Portarlington a large group gathered at the location."

The Bank Holiday weekend saw some of the hottest days of the year so far with gardai called to numerous examples of people not abiding by restrictions.
