Gardai share pictures from aftermath of Limerick party as Minister hammers participants

Gardai have shared pictures showing the aftermath of a street party in Limerick last night, while Minister Simon Harris slammed those who participated in the event.

Three people were arrested after officers were called to the large gathering in College Court, Castletroy, at around 7:15pm on Tuesday.

Two men, 20s, were arrested under the Public Order Legislation and one man, 20s, was arrested under Misuse of Drugs Legislation.

Gardai issued a further 30 fines for breaches of lockdown rules at the scene.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have commenced an investigation into identifying the organisers of this event, and as with all breaches of the Public Health Regulations a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions."

UL President Professor Kerstin Mey condemned the videos and said: “UL will take action with strong disciplinary measures against any student who has been found to have breached public health guidelines. Students at UL are subject to a Code of Conduct.”

Shocking footage posted on social media shows a large group of at least 50 young people gathered in the College Court area.

Little to no social distancing is being observed in the scenes posted online with music, cheering and even a flare appearing to be set-off in one clip.

Since being uploaded to the web earlier this evening the clips have been widely circulated on social media.

And gardai have now shared pictures showing the aftermath of the party, with cans and bottles strewn across the front lawns of houses on the street.

Investigations are currently underway to find the organisers of the event.

While Minister Simon Harris has described the scenes as a "slap in the face" to people across the country.

He wrote on Twitter yesterday: "Students like everyone have suffered a lot with Covid-19. The scenes in Limerick tonight are completely unacceptable & a slap in the face to everyone sacrificing so much.

"It does a real disservice to all students who abide by the rules day in and out. I have spoken to UL tonight."
