Gardai set up checkpoints across Ireland as 68 motorists caught for speeding on National Slow Down Day

Gardai are out in force this morning keeping an eye on speeding drivers on National Slow Down Day.

Officers have already caught 68 motorists for speeding between 7am and 8.30am on Friday.

Checkpoints are being set up across the country as part of National Slow Down Day, which began at 7am and will last for 24 hours.

A garda spokesperson said: "National Slow Down Day commenced at 7am this morning 24/05/19 and will run for 24 hours.

"The aim of Slow Down day is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding.

"Between 7am and 8.30am, Gardaí & GoSafe checked 5,062 vehicles.

"68 vehicles in excess of speed limit. Notable speeds include: 87km/h in 50km/h Zone on R118 Rock Road Dublin 4 Dublin. 77km/h in 60km/h Zone on M7 Lewistown Naas Kildare."
