Gardai seize whopping €12million worth of cocaine on freight from South America

Over €12million worth of drugs have been seized in Cork.

Gardai and Revenue discovered the massive haul on a freight that came from South America.

The cocaine was discovered by Revenue Customs officers after it docked in the harbour.

Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll said: "A joint operation undertaken today involving participation by An Garda Síochána, through the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Revenue Customs Service, that resulted in the seizure of a substance believed to be cocaine with an estimated street sale value of 12.04 million euro, demonstrates the potential of collaborative working relationships involving partner agencies, in tackling importation of controlled drugs that harm our communities.

"An Garda Síochána will continue to work with others at a national and international level in targeting the importation and supply of illicit drugs and the organised crime gangs that benefit from such activity”.

It's the biggest drugs seizure in Cork in several years but by no means the biggest - Operation Seabight - a joint operation involving Gardai, Irish customs agents and international agencies resulted in the seizure of €440m worth of cocaine off Mizen Head in July, 2007.

A 60-foot yacht loaded with more than seventy bales of the cocaine was seized by a team of European anti-drugs agencies led by Irish authorities.

Three men were arrested and later given jail sentences of ten years each.
