Gardai seize vehicle and teach owner a lesson over misunderstood rule of the road

Gardai seized an e-scooter and issued a warning to other owners after an incident in Co Kilkenny.

Officers caught the rider exiting "without yielding to traffic", before allegedly refusing to stop when asked by a member of the gardai.

The incident happened near the Newpark Shopping Centre in Kilkenny city on Wednesday afternoon.

Cabinet approved regulation for e-scooters in Ireland for the first time back in October.

And while gardai are still waiting for this to officially take effect, they have warned owners that the Road Traffic Act must still be followed by all those using the vehicles.

A Kilkenny garda spokesman said: "While we await the commencement of legislation covering E Scooters and indeed after such, obligations under the Road Traffic Act remain as the owner of this vehicle learned a few minutes ago near Newpark Shopping centre, Kilkenny.

"The rider exited without yielding to traffic before refusing to stop when directed by a Garda member. The scooter was then seized.

"Maybe Shank's Mare might be a more suitable form of transport."
