Gardai see revellers fleeing on foot as they storm busy shebeen in Limerick

Gardai were alerted to a shebeen operating in Limerick after a number of people fled the premises on foot.

Officers in Rathkeale were called to a former pub in the area after noticing a lot of activity at 4pm on Friday.

Gardaí entered the premises and discovered a number of individuals socialising inside with large amounts of alcohol, playing cards and two open fires lit.

While conducting inquiries, a Garda spokesperson said "a number of persons were seen fleeing the area, through a private dwelling, on foot."

Investigations into the unlicensed premises are ongoing with names taken of all those found inside.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí took details of all persons present. Investigations have commenced into the use of the unlicensed premises for alcohol consumption and breach of Covid-19 Public Health Regulations.

"A file will be prepared and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for direction. Investigations are ongoing.

"Gardaí in Newcastlewest are appealing to anyone who may have information on the operation of this premises to contact them on 069 20048 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."

It comes after some 15 people were caught red-handed in a suspected illegal drinking den in Kildare on New Year's Eve.

The names of those present were taken during the raid.

And pictures of the premises show a well-stocked, comfortably furnished establishment – with "all the trappings of a traditional pub."
