Gardai have issued an urgent warning to businesses in a Meath town that an influx of fake €50 notes may be circulating among them.
Local shop and business owners in Trim have been urged to double check all their notes as Gardai suspect some fraudulent bills are going around.
And the Meath Crime Prevention Facebook page helpfully attached some tips for businesses to spot the €50 fakers.
"Gardaí in Trim would like to warn local shop and business owners to be extra vigilant due to the possibility of fraudulent 50 euro notes which may be in circulation in the area," they said.
"Obvious security features should be identified before accepting notes.
"These include; checking for the watermark, security thread, hologram patch and raised print.
"Please take a few seconds to feel, examine and tilt euro notes, that way fraudsters can be prevented from passing off their fakes as the real thing.
"FEEL –Special printing processes give the banknotes their unique feel.
"LOOK –Look at the banknote against the light. The portrait window and watermark as well as the security thread become visible.
"TILT -Tilt the banknote. The silvery stripe reveals a portrait of Europa in a transparent window and the emerald number displays an effect of the light that moves up and down.
"If you suspect somebody has passed a fraudulent euro note please contact Trim Gardaí on 046 9481540."
