A man in his 20s has been seriously injured in a workplace accident in Co Cavan.
The incident happened at the Lakeland Dairies plant in the Killeshandra area of the county at around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The man was working as an external contractor on the site where the dairy company produces its foodservice products.
According to a spokesperson for Lakeland Dairies, the accident involved "a malfunction of welding equipment being used in the contracted working area".
Emergency services including ambulance personnel and gardai rushed to the scene.
The young man was then transferred to Cavan General Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.
The spokesperson for Lakeland Dairies told the Irish Mirror: "Our first thoughts are with the person affected by this accident and we wish them a speedy recovery.
"At this time we have no further details except to say that this matter will be investigated thoroughly by Lakeland Dairies.
"We are grateful to the emergency services for their attendance and assistance following the accident."
The Health and Safety Authority has since launched an investigation into the incident.
A spokesperson said: "The Health and Safety Authority is aware of this incident, and the matter is currently under investigation."
A garda spokesperson added: "Gardaí attended the scene of a workplace incident in the Killeshandra area of Co Cavan at approximately 3:30pm yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, 16th November 2021.
"One male, aged in his 20s, was conveyed to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries sustained as a result of this incident.
"This matter has been referred to the Health and Safety Authority."
