Gardai rush to scene as woman fighting for life after serious assault in Ennis, Co Clare

Gardai have rushed to the scene of a serious assault in Co Clare.

The incident happened at around 6pm on Thursday in the Market Square area of Ennis.

A woman, whose age is not yet known, was taken to University Hospital Limerick after the assault.

Officers have described her current condition as "critical".

A man, whose age is also not known, was arrested at the scene.

He is currently being held by gardai at Shannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious assault that occurred in Market Square, Ennis, Co. Clare this evening, Thursday 28th January 2021 at approximately 6pm.

"A woman, details currently unknown, has been taken to University Hospital Limerick where her condition has been described as critical.

"A male, details currently unknown, was arrested by Gardaí and is currently detained in Shannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing."
